Raising Stars Self Help Group
This is a youth group based in Laundry-Babadogo area formed in April 16th 2010 with the goal of discovering their talents and skills and to use them to empower the community on environmental issues and mobilization of resources so as to uplift their economic and social status. The youths forming this group have taken it upon themselves to make a living out of the ordinary. They partake in activities such as pig keeping, tree planting, and garbage collection.
When it comes to animal rearing, they usually purchase the young ones of the farm animals, and then breed them until they mature up. As they mature up, they seek information about the animal, i.e. its mating season, the type of food it takes, what kind of environment it should live in etc, so as to ensure that they meet the standards of breeding such an animal. Once the animal matures, they sell it to interested individuals. At this point the price of the animal is usually higher than the original price since it was purchased as a young one but has now matured. Such a group can benefit from the CIC by gaining more information on animal keeping, effective marketing of livestock, and types of trees suitable for that area’s environmental surrounding, and effective marketing. This will also encourage more networking and liaising with respective companies, groups, and organizations that deal with livestock keeping and waste recycling.
“Other than participating in garbage collection, sensitizing the community on the importance of garbage collection is one of our main goals. Therefore, the CIC will be our channel to getting more knowledge on better ways, and the importance of conserving the environment.” – Allan Asuza, Chairman, Raising Stars Self Help Group.
Dove Self Help Group
Formed in 1996 December, this group is made up of 15 members and is involved in activities such as garbage collection and tailoring. The main reasons for the formation of this group were to promote, educate and empower youths, to protect and conserve the environment and natural resources, to create and promote job opportunities specifically for the youths who are jobless. Majority of the members of this group would like to be computer literate, acquire more knowledge on video and documentary making, e-learning or distance learning, information, communication and technology. With the use of the CIC services, such groups will be able to meet their challenges effectively by getting equipped with advanced knowledge.
“The CIC will definitely help us in getting more informed and encourage networking in our fields of interest. Other than this, we are looking forward to learning more from video documentaries, radio listening sessions, and talk shows.”–Redson Onyango, Chairman, Dove Self Help Group.
Touching Angel Help the Needy Group
Started in 2008, this group comprises of 38 members with a mission to empower members of the society through viable and social economic initiatives so as to cater for the needy children as they also equip youths with knowledge on various areas of life. This group is involved in activities such as supporting vulnerable children through their education, holding feeding programmes which is usually geared towards orphans and the needy, promoting HIV/AIDs awareness, encouraging capacity building for women through knitting, embroidery, vegetable farming, craft, and tie and dye.
Through the activities, they are able to get funds which are geared towards supporting orphans and vulnerable children through their education, and providing meals for them. Such an organization can benefit from the CIC by marketing its products, get advanced ideas on effective management of its business, and also expand its network. It is indeed amazing how they are able to plant vegetables in sacks and see to it that they grow in good quality and quantity.

Wisdom Centre School
Situated in Kariadudu area of Babadogo, this school was started in 2008 with an aim of managing the illiteracy level and providing affordable education to the less fortunate. This school is faced with several challenges including its environmental surrounding. The school is situated next to a dumping site and sewer system. On top of this, the classes have limited spacing to comfortably accommodate all the children enrolled, forcing the some of the students to site on the floor, and move about in class by climbing the desks.
These students’ health is at stake. This is because they play right outside where garbage is thrown since it is the only available playground they have. Foul smell from garbage engulfs the school, making it uncomfortable for the students to concentrate on their studies. Limited books and other learning materials are also challenges that face this school. It is through sheer determination to empower themselves and enrich their minds so as to be able to lead a better life in the future that makes the students endure the kind of environment that they study in.
With the CIC’s services, teachers and students can get more information in their areas of specialization, hence curbing the problem of limited learning materials. On top of this, the challenges facing will get shared with the outside community, thereby encouraging well wishers who are capable and want to offer assistance.
“The CIC is such a blessing to this society with the plans ahead. If all is implemented, we shall eradicate illiteracy and promote quality education to acquire the adequate skills to our learners and the society.” – Michael Ooro, Principal, Wisdom Centre School.
Kariadudu Koria Development Group
Sharing of ideas, talents and teamwork amongst members of a community towards sustainable living is an effective way of improving standards of living not only to the individuals, but also the society at large. Mostly made of men, this group was formed in 2006 with the vision of advising its members on economic ventures and helping each other on social matters that will eventually help them come up with ways of improving their standards of living.
The group mainly deals with dress making, what they refer to as “tukra,” which they sell in different parts of the country. Their products are distinguishable and have been traded in areas such as Kericho, Nandi Hills, Kisumu, Kisii and even Nakuru to mention just a few.
Insufficient capital, lack of effective transportation, and inefficient marketing, are some of the challenges facing this group. Marketing of their products is mostly done via word of mouth, therefore limiting the extent to which the group can reap maximum benefits. Marketing strategies, networking, and relevant information on effective business management are some of the benefits that this group can gain from the CIC.
“Our main challenge is in the area of getting information on modern sewing machines, materials and ready market. We are looking forward to getting more informed on these from the CIC.” –Kennedy Nyabola, Chairman, Kariadudu Koria Group.
